Crypto Leverage and Liquidation: A Practical Guide

Learn how leverage changes notional exposure, why liquidation can occur, and which exchange-specific rules matter.

Leverage lets a trader control a larger notional position relative to posted margin. It also reduces the room available to absorb adverse price movements.

Notional exposure

A simple approximation is notional exposure = margin × leverage. This is before fees and exchange-specific adjustments. Leverage does not reduce the market risk of the notional position.

Why liquidation is not a fixed percentage

Liquidation depends on maintenance margin, margin mode, mark price, fee treatment, funding, position size and exchange risk tiers. A basic calculator can only provide a rough scenario, not an exact liquidation price.

Risk controls

Understand isolated versus cross margin, check the venue's liquidation methodology, and avoid treating a stop order as a guarantee of execution at a specific price.
