Crypto Spot vs Perpetual Futures: Key Differences

Understand how spot crypto markets differ from perpetual futures, including leverage, funding, liquidation risk and market exposure.

Spot markets and perpetual futures can reference the same asset, but they represent different trading products. Understanding the differences is essential before comparing prices or planning risk.

What is spot trading?

In a spot market, a buyer and seller exchange the underlying asset or a claim to it under the exchange's rules. Spot exposure is generally straightforward: the position value changes with the asset price, before fees and other costs.

Spot products can still carry custody, platform, liquidity and market risks. The exact mechanics depend on the exchange and jurisdiction.

What is a perpetual futures contract?

A perpetual contract is a derivative designed to track an underlying reference price without a conventional expiry date. Traders may gain long or short exposure without holding the underlying coin.

Perpetuals commonly use margin, leverage, funding payments and exchange-specific liquidation rules. These features can amplify losses as well as gains.

Funding, leverage and liquidation

Funding payments are periodic transfers defined by a venue's contract rules. Their direction and size can change. Funding is not guaranteed to be positive or negative for either side.

Leverage reduces the margin needed for a given notional exposure but makes equity more sensitive to price moves. Liquidation mechanics depend on mark price, maintenance margin, fees and risk tiers.

How to compare them

Compare the exact instrument, venue, liquidity, fees, funding, margin mode and data timestamp. A spot price and a perpetual contract price should not be treated as interchangeable.

This overview is educational, not a recommendation to trade either product.
