Reading market structure · Lesson 1 of 3

Trend across timeframes

Describe direction and how it differs by timeframe.

7 minute read

Name the timeframe first

A trend is the general direction of price over a window, often described by the sequence of highs and lows. What reads as an uptrend on a daily chart may look like a pullback on an hourly one, so the timeframe is part of the statement, not an afterthought.

A common approach is to take context from a longer timeframe and timing from a shorter one, giving the longer view more weight. Trend descriptions are retrospective and change as new prices are added.

Key takeaway

Use these concepts to understand the market, not to assume a particular outcome. Always define uncertainty and risk before making a decision.
