Halving

A scheduled reduction in a proof-of-work block reward.

Definition and explanation

A halving is a programmed decrease in the block reward paid to miners, reducing the rate of new issuance for a particular proof-of-work asset. The schedule is defined in the asset's rules. Past halvings describe history; they do not by themselves predict price, and any market response will vary with conditions.

Example

If a network halves its block reward, newly created coins enter circulation at half the previous rate, subject to the network's specific rules.
